Apple has finally made a foldable iPhone. At first glance, the iPhone Duo seems to follow a formula we already know: a smaller display on the outside, a much larger screen on the inside, and a hinge connecting the two halves. But describing it simply as “a foldable iPhone” misses what is actually interesting about it.
The more revealing details are the small decisions Apple has made around the fold — how the interface responds as the phone opens, how Apple approaches the crease, how the device can be positioned on a desk, and what happens to iOS when an iPhone suddenly has a 7.6-inch display to work with.
The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. But the more interesting question isn't simply how large that inner screen is. It's what Apple can actually do with the fact that the iPhone can fold. Here are eight details worth paying attention to.

A simple switch can make it feel as though one interface has disappeared and another has suddenly appeared. The Duo instead makes the change feel continuous.
You aren't simply watching the outer display turn off and the inner display turn on. It's more like watching the same interface gradually unfold into a larger space. StandBy pushes this idea further. When placed down, the Duo can become a clock, photo display, widget hub, or information screen. This is where the foldable form factor starts to become more interesting. The phone isn't simply becoming bigger or smaller.

Battery design is one of the less visible challenges of building a foldable phone. A traditional smartphone has one relatively continuous internal space. A book-style foldable has to divide that space between two halves of the device, with a hinge occupying the middle.
The iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery architecture, distributing the batteries across the two sides of the foldable body instead of simply trying to fit a much larger battery into a conventional phone design.
Apple also combines this with a custom vapor chamber and the A20 Pro chip to manage performance and heat. It's not the kind of feature you'll notice immediately when you pick up the phone.
But it highlights one of the biggest differences between a conventional smartphone and a foldable. Once a phone starts bending in the middle, almost every internal component has to be reconsidered. Even something as basic as where the battery should go.

It doesn't turn the Duo into an iPad. Instead, it pushes the iPhone closer to some of the use cases traditionally associated with a tablet — without actually becoming one. And that may be one of the most interesting things about the foldable form factor.
It allows one device to move between the roles of a phone and a small tablet without fully becoming either one.
The Bigger Idea Behind iPhone Duo
When you look at these eight features together, the most interesting thing about the iPhone Duo may not be any single feature. It's the fact that Apple appears to be treating the fold as a system-wide design problem.
The hinge affects the display. The display affects the software. The software affects how the phone can be positioned. The larger screen changes multitasking. The more ambitious version is a device where the hardware, software, and physical position all change together. The iPhone Duo is Apple's first attempt at that idea. Whether a $1,999 foldable iPhone is worth buying is another question entirely. But if you put the price aside for a moment, the most interesting thing about the Duo may not be that Apple finally made an iPhone that folds.
